Far Beyond Death

 Far Beyond Death.....

                                        - Shruti

When the stars shine bright , against the dark sky

And the river rustles like a lullaby.

When the trees turn ghostly , with the darkest hue

And silently sing for the slumbering cuckoo,

And everyone is long asleep,

With silent strides she moves towards him

The feel of his wail fuels her pace,

She breathes hard, careful to keep down her face.

When she reaches the front of the house ,

The gates swing open knowing the cause.

Quietly she steps in and takes the child in her arms

And squeezes tight her eyes at the feel

She rubs her cheek against his hands , and

Quietly lulls him behind the sleeping man , and

When the child drifts to sleep

With tearful eyes, she tries to leave.

But then she is pulled back

Horrorstruck ,she turns to find the child cling to her gown

A watery smile flickers across her lips

As she bends down to give him a kiss.

Gently she peels off his hands,

And for one last time takes him in her arms,

And then her voice quivers but still she sings

“Oh ! my child go to sleep

For the dreams wait for you to come.

With starry ceiling for you to touch, and

Colourful butterflies for you to hunt.

With cool breeze to kiss your face, and

Sweet raspberry for you to taste.

Oh ! my child go to sleep

As my time has come to leave.

Oh ! my child go to sleep

As has come the ceiling of the concrete “

And, oh yes ! she might be dead and far,

But still she is closest to his heart.

His wail, his smile she feels it all.

For a mother’s love is eternal,

Far beyond the death’s grasp.

In the loving memory of school life.....

We never noticed how time passed, From rubbing the blackboard and feeling for it proud, To counting the photographs for reading a lesson out...
